Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum, one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Protect from > 4 hours of light exposure.

Preferred Volume

1.0 mL

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL

Transport

Frozen at or below -20°C, protect from > 4 hours of light exposure.

Rejection Criteria

Grossly hemolyzed serum specimens.

Plasma specimens.

Specimens exposed to light for > 4 hours.

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Ambient (20-25°C): 2 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 24 hours if left on original SST; 48 hours if aliquoted; Frozen (at or below -20°C): 2 months
