Guidelines

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Aspirate Vaginal secretions, or use swab, place in sterile tube with 0.5 mL saline

Handling

Must be received in laboratory within 15 minutes for optimal Trichomonas viability. If delay is unavoidable, also order the Trichomonas Antigen.

Minimum Volume

1 swab in 0.5 mL preservative free saline

Transport

Room temperature, deliver immediately to the lab upon collection

Rejection Criteria

Frozen or refrigerated specimen, leaking or nonsterile container, dry swab

Stability

Ambient: 30 minutes (trichomonas viability begins to decline as rapidly as 15 minutes after collection).
