See Viral and Pertussis Collection Instructions. Order miscellaneous lab test and specify COVID-19 as the test to be performed.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

1 nasopharyngeal swab in 3 mL of M4 or M4-RT viral transport medium. Only sterile Dacron or rayon swabs should be used. See Rejection Criteria below.

 

Remel Multi-Microbe Media (M4) is the primary transport media for Legacy Laboratory Services. Legacy will accept these other transport media:  Copan Universal Transport Medium (UTM-RT, BD Universal Viral Transport, Cepheid Xpert Viral Transport media and BD Universal Viral Transport for Quest Diagnostics.

Handling

Place the swab in viral transport media immediately. Place each specimen in an individually sealed bag. 

Transport

Refrigerated. Cold packs/pouches must be used if placing specimens in a lockbox for pick-up.

Rejection Criteria

Specimens not in viral transport media listed in the Collect section will be rejected.

 

Other rejection criteria: Swabs with calcium alginate shafts. Cotton swabs with wooden shaft. Specimens received refrigerated more than 72 hours after collection. Specimens received frozen. ESwab. Swabs in Amies liquid or gel transport.
