Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 5.0 mL gold (SST), 8.5 mL red-grey marble, 7.0 mL red, 4.0 mL dark green (sodium heparin), or 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma within one hour of collection

This test cannot definitively differentiate between active vs passive exposure or tobacco product use vs nicotine replacement products such as patches or gum. If it is medically necessary to differentiate Tobacco from Nicotine products, a reference test that includes Anabasine (a Tobacco product marker) is available.
