Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Body Fluid, collect in a sterile container

Handling

Centrifuge body fluid and separate from cells.  Keep refrigerated or frozen after collection.  Indicate source of body fluid on the collection container and test request form.

Preferred Volume

1.0 mL

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL

Transport

Preferred: Frozen (≤ -20°C)

Also acceptable: Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Rejection Criteria

Grossly hemolyzed specimens

Stability

Room Temperature (18-26°C): Unacceptable; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 3 days; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 2 weeks
