Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Patient should not smoke after midnight before the morning of the draw, minimum: 7 hours of not smoking. Ammonia is increased after smoking.

Collect

Plasma, one 2.0 mL or 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tube. For pediatric draws, use an EDTA microtainer tube.

Handling

Separate from cells within 30 minutes of collection. Minimize exposure to air by keeping the tube sealed as much as possible. Send EDTA plasma to the lab on ice.
LEGACY HOSPITAL INPATIENTS ONLY: The tube of whole blood is placed on wet ice (ca. 2-8°C) for transport and centrifuged immediately at 2-8°C. Perform analysis within 30 minutes.

1.0 mL Plasma

Minimum Volume

0.25 mL Plasma, (0.60 mL minimum whole blood draw)

Transport

Refrigerated (2-8°C) or Frozen (≤ -20°C). Transport in sealed container with cold packs, ice, or dry ice.

INPATIENTS: The tube of whole blood is placed on wet ice (ca. 2-8°C) for transport and centrifuged immediately at 2-8°C. Perform analysis within 30 minutes.

Moderately hemolyzed specimens, lipemic specimens
