Guidelines

Do not use to diagnose liver dysfunction. Use to screen for inborn errors of bile acid metabolism or monitor bile acid therapy.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Patient should fast for a minimum of eight hours prior to specimen collection

Collect

Serum, one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: SST – 30 minutes and red top: 60 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum from cells. Transfer 1 mL serum to an aliquot tube.

1.0 mL Serum

Minimum Volume

0.2 mL Serum (whole blood 0.6 mL minimum draw)

Refrigerated (2-8 ºC)

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 8 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 2 weeks; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 3 months
