Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Venous Whole Blood, one heparinized blood gas syringe

Handling

Collect anaerobically. Blood gas syringe should be capped with no air space.

Minimum Volume

1.0 mL 

(Pediatric:  0.4 – 0.5 mL)

Transport

Transport immediately, if testing is delayed more than 30 minutes, specimen should be on wet ice.

Rejection Criteria

Specimens with syringe uncapped, with airspace, collected in tubes with benzalkonium heparin, EDTA, citrate, oxalate and fluoride

Stability

Ambient (20-25°C): 30 minutes; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 30 minutes; Frozen (at or below -20°C): Unacceptable
