Specimen Collection Requirements
Venous Whole Blood, one heparinized blood gas syringe
Collect anaerobically. Blood gas syringe should be capped with no air space.
(Pediatric: 0.4 – 0.5 mL)
Transport immediately, if testing is delayed more than 30 minutes, specimen should be on wet ice.
Specimens with syringe uncapped, with airspace, collected in tubes with benzalkonium heparin, EDTA, citrate, oxalate and fluoride
Ambient (20-25°C): 30 minutes; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 30 minutes; Frozen (at or below -20°C): Unacceptable
Venous blood gases can be collected at a laboratory draw station located on a Legacy hospital campus. Please contact the draw station to see if this service is available.
