To be used for Inpatient, ED and/or surgical testing. Order as part of a Blood Gas Panel only.
Specimen Collection Requirements
Whole Blood, one lithium heparin blood gas syringe only
Do NOT send plasma tubes. All specimens should be collected under anaerobic conditions. Any loss of CO2 will increase the pH, which decreases ionized calcium. Do not store specimens on ice. Send unspun. Expel air from syringe before capping. Whole blood should be analyzed within 30 minutes of collection.
EDTA, citrate, oxalate and sodium fluoride, severely hemolyzed specimens, specimens sent in plasma tubes
Ambient (20-25°C): 30 minutes; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 30 minutes; Frozen (at or below -20°C): Unacceptable

1.0 - 1.9 days: 1.00-1.18 mmol/L
≥2 days: 1.12-1.26 mmol/L
