Collect

Bone Marrow, use a syringe rinsed with 0.5 mL of preservative free sodium heparin (1,000 U.S.P. units)

Handling

Preservative free sodium heparin is the preferred anticoagulant. Expel the aspirate into a dark green (sodium heparin) top tube or into transport media formulated for cytogenetic tissue culture application. Keep specimen at ambient temperature and transport the same day or always within 24 hours. See Cytogenetics, Flow Cytometry and FISH Specimens for Leukemia, Lymphoma and Other Oncology Referrals.
