Synonym

Karyotype - Karyotyping - Chromosomes - Chromosome Study - Cytogenetics

Guidelines

Chromosomal abnormalities may assist in the identification and classification of malignant tissues

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Biopsy and/or an Intact Lymph Node

Handling

Use sterile technique. Place specimen in a screw top container and cover with sterile Hanks BSS, normal saline or RPMI transport media. The volume of transport media should be sufficient to keep the specimen from drying out. Do not expose to, or place in, formalin. The specimen needs to be processed the same day as collected and always within 24 hours. STAT delivery is recommended. See Cytogenetics/Flow Cytometry/FISH Specimens for Leukemia, Lymphoma and Other Oncology Referrals.

Minimum Volume

Approximately a 1.0 cm3 specimen

Transport

Room temperature

Rejection Criteria

SPECIMENS SUBMITTED IN OR EXPOSED TO FORMALIN. Rejection is only at the discretion of the Cytogenetics Laboratory.

Stability

Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: Suboptimal, call Cytogenetics Lab at (503) 413-4613

Testing Information

Note

Clinical information including the indication for study must accompany the specimen. Requisition forms for cytogenetics studies are available upon request.

Performed

7 days/week

Reported

3-4 weeks

Method

Classical G-Band Chromosomal Analysis
