Guidelines

No testing is performed on the specimen. The specimen is held in the Blood Bank for three days. Use when a remote possibility of transfusion is possible such as routine obstetrical deliveries and certain surgical procedures.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Whole Blood, two full 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes

Handling

Tubes must be labeled appropriately. See Blood Bank Specimen Collection Guidelines.

Preferred Volume

Two full 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes

Minimum Volume

Two lavender (EDTA) top microtainer tubes (Whole Blood 1.0 mL minimum draw)

Transport

Ambient or refrigerated

Rejection Criteria

Gross hemolysis, incorrect specimen container, incorrectly labeled or frozen

Stability

Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: Unacceptable
