Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Nasopharyngeal swab (NP swab) - Place swab immediately into sterile tube containing 1.5-3 mL of Viral Transport Media. Use only synthetic fiber swabs with plastic or wire shafts.

Nasal Washes/Aspirates – Must be submitted in a clean leak proof container.

Note: Transport media must be securely capped. Leaking specimens will be rejected. Nasal Wash Traps will be rejected.

Handling

Place each specimen in an individually sealed bag.

1.5 mL

0.8 mL

Specimens refrigerated (2-8 ºC)

Rejection Criteria

Any source other than nasopharyngeal swabs or nasal washes/aspirates including nasal swabs and endotracheal aspirates. Leaking specimens and respiratory traps. Specimens past stability

Stability

NP swab - Ambient (15-30 ºC): 24 hours.

                  Refrigerated (2-8 ºC): 7 days

Nasal Wash/Aspirate – In viral transport medium       

                   Refrigerated (2-8ºC): 72 hours;

                   Frozen (-70ºC): two freeze thaw cycles.
