Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Body fluid, one sterile container. Do not use tubes with anti-coagulant. Indicate source of body fluid on the collection container and test request form. If more than one tube is collected, each tube should be labeled with a number indicating the sequence in which it was collected.

Handling

If cellular material is present, centrifuge specimen and remove supernatant within four hours of collection. Keep refrigerated after collection.

Rejection Criteria

Gastric fluids, fluids collected with anti-coagulant, fluids from sources outside the body, and intraosseous specimens will not be accepted.

Stability

Body Fluids other than Amniotic Fluid: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 24 hours, Refrigerated (2-8°C): 7 days, Frozen (≤ -20°C): 3 months

Amniotic Fluid: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 1 hour, Refrigerated (2-8°C): 24 hours, Frozen (≤ -20°C): 2 months
