Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

A blood specimen must be collected within 24 hours of the initiation of the urine collection, at any time during the urine collection, or within 24 hours after the end of the urine collection.

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 5.0 mL gold (SST), 7.0 mL red or 3.0 mL mint green (lithium heparin, PST) top tube, AND Urine, 2.0 mL aliquot of a 12 or 24 hour urine collection

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: SST - 30 minutes and red top tubes - 60 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells within four hours of collection.

Urine: 12 or 24 hour collection container refrigerated (2-8°C). Submit patient's height, weight and total volume of the 12 or 24 hour collection on the requisition.

Preferred Volume

1.0 mL serum or plasma AND 2.0 mL aliquot of urine

Minimum Volume

0.25 mL Serum/Plasma, (0.60 mL minimum whole blood draw) AND 0.5 mL aliquot of urine

Grossly hemolyzed serum or plasma

Stability

SERUM OR PLASMA: AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 24 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 7 days; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 6 months

URINE: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 2 days; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 6 days; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 28 days

If height and weight are not provided, the creatinine clearance will be reported without a correction for body surface area.
