Synonym

Whooping Cough - Bordetella pertussis - Pertussis Culture

Includes

This test will detect Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis. No susceptibility testing.

Guidelines

Use only for respiratory specimens. Other tests available: B Pertussis DNA by PCR (preferred test). The swabs used for Culture (orange top) are NOT interchangeable with the swabs used for pertussis PCR (green top). Also available on Respiratory Viral Panel by PCR.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Nasopharyngeal swabs in Amies charcoal transport (Supply No. 189160).

Nasal wash or aspirate in sterile screw-cap container with aspiration tubing removed, must be in microbiology laboratory within 2 hours.

Handling

See Viral Pertussis Collection. Do not leave tubing attached to cap of trap collection devices. Must specify source on the requisition or order.

Preferred Volume

1.0-5.0 mL, 1 minitip swab

0.5 mL

Transport

Room temperature, ASAP

Rejection Criteria

Specimen in viral transport media or formalin type preservative, leaking or nonsterile containers, material from non-nasal, frozen specimens, swabs not in Amies charcoal transport

Stability

Swabs in Amies Transport (orange top) - Ambient: 24 hours

Wash or aspirate - Ambient: 2 hours

Testing Information

Note

Do not send patients to Patient Service Centers or laboratories for specimen collection.

The B. pertussis organism is fastidious to culture, and stability limited. PCR testing is recommended.
