Guidelines

Two to three draws per initial 24 hour episode are recommended. For routine aerobic/anaerobic organisms, NOT for AFB, Fungus or special organisms, e.g. Bartonella, Legionella. This order can also be used for Bone Marrow.

Patient Preparation

Decontaminate site with scrub/prep. Use, aseptic techniques per defined procedure.

Collect

Blood, one blue cap aerobic and one purple cap anaerobic BTA bottle per adult blood draw, one yellow cap BTA pediatric bottle per pediatric draw. Bone Marrow preferred, one green cap BTA bottle.

Handling

Wipe bottle septum with alcohol before inserting blood. Indicate the draw site (e.g. A line, left antecubital, etc.) on the bottles, order, or requisition.

Please call Microbiology at (503) 413-4084 for any nonroutine requests or if any potential bioterrorism agents are suspected (examples: Francisella, Brucella)

Cultures for HACEK organisms do not need to be held longer than the standard 5 days.
