Gram stain and susceptibility if generally applicable.
Use this order for normally sterile fluids except CSF, amniotic fluid and urine that have separate orders. Do not use this test order for swab specimens. Synovial fluid cultures will be held 14 days to rule out Cutibacterium.
Specimen Collection Requirements
Decontaminate site with scrub/prep. Use aseptic collection.
Aspirate of peritoneal, thoracentesis, synovial, pericardial, bile or culdocentesis fluid
Collect specimen in sterile tightly sealed container, sterile-capped syringe with the needle removed, anaerobic transport tube, or blood culture bottles if more than 10 mL (aerobic and anaerobic). When using blood culture bottles, wipe septum with alcohol before inserting fluid. Must specify specimen source on order or requisition.
EDTA tubes, frozen, leaking or nonsterile containers
Testing Information
Preliminary Negative: 1 day; Final Negative: 5 days
Final Negative Synovial Fluid: 14 days
Standard Aerobic Bacterial Culture, Anaerobic Culture performed on properly collected specimens

Additional charges for identification of organisms (CPT 87077). Susceptibility tests are performed as appropriate (CPT 87186, 87184, 87181, 87147).
