Collect Aspirated fluid Handling Collect fluid in a sterile tightly sealed container, do not leave tubing attached to the cap. For protected brush, aseptically cut off brush without sheath into 1.0 mL of non-bacteriostatic saline in screw-top container. Preferred Volume 1.0-10.0 mL Minimum Volume 0.5 mL Transport Room temperature, ASAP Rejection Criteria Frozen specimens, specimens in formalin type preservative, leaking or nonsterile containers Stability Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 24 hours; Frozen: Unacceptable Testing Information Performed 7 days/week Reported Preliminary Negative: 1 day; Final Negative: 2-3 days Method Standard Aerobic Bacterial Culture, Anaerobic Culture performed on properly collected specimens (e.g. protected brushes) Reference Values Reference Values No growth, or normal upper respiratory flora Comments Liquid specimens reported as CFU/mL.
