Susceptibility performed on any isolate with available standardized criteria.  Does NOT include Anaerobic Culture or Gram Stain

Guidelines

This order is designed for dialysis catheter exit sites ONLY that may be infected with common skin organisms. Preferably, collect before therapy. Do NOT use this order for actual pieces of tissue, see Culture, Tissue. For deep complicated wounds, see Culture, Exudate. Collect sample from base or advancing margin of lesion. AFB, Fungus, Virus or Gram Stain can be ordered separately.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Decontaminate site with scrub/prep. Use aseptic collection. Aspiration of fluid, or injection of 0.1-0.5 mL nonbacteriostatic saline with aspiration at advancing border acceptable or swab of open lesion.

Collect

Use culture collection-transport swab or syringe (see Microbiology Collection Devices).

Handling

Collect fluid in capped syringe with needle removed or sterile container. Must specify specimen source on order or requisition. Deliver ASAP to the laboratory.
