Includes

Gram stain and susceptibility, if generally applicable. Corneal rings do not include Gram stain.

Guidelines

May include eyelid margin, lacrimal sac, conjunctiva, corneal scrapings, corneal ring or vitreous humor. Obtain media from lab for corneal scraping direct inoculation. Separate order and collection needed for virus, chlamydia or fungus.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Obtain specimen before topical medications applied.

Collect

Drainage, aspirate using a culture collection and transport swab  or mini-swab, or syringe.

Vitreous & other eye fluids can be inoculated directly into a pediatric blood culture bottle 361886; before inoculating into bottle, flip off the yellow top and rub down the rubber stopper with alcohol.

 

Handling

Submit capped syringe with needle removed or fluid in sterile container. Corneal rings in anaerobic transport or sterile container. Label as to right or left eye.

Minimum Volume

1 swab, 0.5 mL

Room temperature ASAP

Rejection Criteria

Frozen, refrigerated or dry specimen, leaking or nonsterile containers

Ambient: 24 hours in transport media
