Guidelines

Induced sputum: Induced sputum collection should only be performed under close medical supervision and using strict infection control procedures. Patients requiring induced sputum collection should be referred to a pulmonary clinic.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

 Material, tissue or body fluid from any site, placed in a sterile container is preferred

Specimens collected from mucosal sites for yeast culture may be collected with a routine culture swab

Handling

Place specimen in sterile container.

Preferred Volume

> 5.0 mL body fluid

One culture swab for yeast culture

Minimum Volume

1.0 mL body fluid

Transport

Material from sterile site: 20-25°C

Material from non-sterile site: 2-8°C

Culture swab:  20-25°C

Rejection Criteria

Frozen specimens or insufficient volume

Stability

Ambient specimen in sterile container: 7 days
Refrigerated specimens:  3 days
Culture swab for yeast:  24 hours

Comments

Applicable sources include a direct smear (CPT 87206).  Additional charges for identification of organisms (CPT 87107, 87106)
