Guidelines

This is a general culture for a variety of genital sources that includes yeast, beta hemolytic streptococcus, staphylococcus and Gardnerella. Does not include mycoplasma, ureaplasma, viral or chlamydia detection. These must be ordered separately.

For Gonorrhea and Chlamydia: Chlamydia and Gonorrhea by Amplified DNA, BD Qx is recommended. For prenatal Strep Screen: Group B Strep is recommended. 

For vaginosis/vaginitis: Vaginal Pathogens DNA Probe, Trichomonas Antigen, Trichomonas Vaginalis by PCR or Wet Mount are recommended. 

Also available, Herpes PCR or Culture Gonorrhea Only. Specific order is available for amniotic fluid or aspirate for culture

A genital culture should not be used for the diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis. Refer to the Gram stain on the culture for best results.

Patient Preparation

Use speculum without lubricant if applicable. Wipe cervix clean of mucous before culturing. Roll swab on mucous surface.
