Guidelines

Use this order for line tip cultures, or small implanted hardware items. When ordering catheter tip cultures, submit concurrent Blood Cultures. Foley catheter tips are unacceptable.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Prep skin before catheter removal.

Collect

Using aseptic technique, cut the distal 5 cm (2 inches) of line into a sterile screw-cap container. Aseptically place small hardward piece into sterile screw-cap container.

Handling

Deliver immediately to the lab.

Preferred Volume

5 cm (2 inch) distal cath tip

Minimum Volume

1 cm distal cath tip

Leaking or nonsterile container, Foley catheter

Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 24 hours

Comments

Results indicate colony count and identification of significant isolates.  Since treatment of catheter infection is removal of device, susceptibilities are NOT done on tips, refer to susceptibilities on concurrent blood cultures.  Additional charges for identification of organisms (CPT 87077).  Susceptibility tests are performed by request only (CPT 87186, 87184, 87181, 87147).
