Guidelines

Specify if C-section or vaginally delivered placenta. This is a general culture for Listeria, Beta Strep and enteric GNB. Does not include mycoplasma, ureaplasma, viral or chlamydia detection. These must be ordered separately. Submit tissue or swab in anaerobic transport system if anaerobes desired on C-section specimen.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Swab suspicious areas of placenta with routine swab in culture transport system. For anaerobes, submit anaerobic transport swab or tissue in sterile container (see Microbiology Collection Devices).

Preferred Volume

1 swab, dual swab acceptable

Minimum Volume

1 swab, or 0.5 gm tissue in sterile container

Transport

Room temperature, ASAP

Rejection Criteria

Frozen specimen, specimen in formalin type preservative, leaking or nonsterile container

Stability

Ambient: 24 hours in transport system, 2 hours without transport system
