Guidelines

This order is primarily used by the Burn Unit and occasionally by the Wound Care Clinic. Used for actual pieces of punch or biopsy tissue where the number of organisms per gram of tissue is needed. Does not include anaerobes or fungus.

Decontaminate site with scrub/prep. Use aseptic collection

Place tissue on top of gel in anaerobic transport tube, or in sterile container on sterile nonbactericidal saline moistened gauze to prevent drying (see Microbiology Collection Devices).
Do not jab tissue into transport gel. Deliver ASAP to laboratory. Must specify specimen source on order or requisition.
