Gram stain and susceptibility, if generally applicable

Guidelines

Use only for respiratory specimens NOT collected with a bronchoscope. May be used for expectorated sputum, endotracheal apirates, nasal wash and suctioned respiratory secretion. Use separate order for throatsinus and bronchial cultures. Pertussis, Pneumocystis, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, AFBFungus or Virology may also be ordered separately. NOT FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS SPECIMENS, which require a special reference test.

Induced sputum: Induced sputum collection should only be performed under close medical supervision and using strict infection control procedures. Patients requiring induced sputum collection should be referred to a pulmonary clinic.

Patient Preparation

Expectorated sputum requires patient instruction and cooperation on obtaining deep cough specimen, NOT saliva.

Collect

Respiratory secretions in sterile screw-cap container.

Handling

Do not leave tubing attached to cap of collection device. Must specify source on order or requisition.

Rejection Criteria

Frozen or specimens in formalin type preservative, expectorated sputum containing excessive epithelial cells, pooled 24 hour specimens, leaking or nonsterile container
