Guidelines

Early morning collection is preferred. Suprapubic aspirates submitted in capped syringe with the needle removed are acceptable for anaerobe culture. NOT for N. gonorrhoeae or chlamydia isolation.

Urine in a sterile screw-cap container, Boric acid transport tube is acceptable.

Collect midstream urine, see Patient Instructions for Collecting a Midstream Urine Sample: English - Russian - Spanish - Vietnamese.  Specify collection mode: cath, voided, suprapubic, etc. on order or requisition. Deliver immediately to the lab or refrigerate sample.

Rejection Criteria

Specimens from catheter bags, Foley catheter tips, frozen specimens, specimens in formalin type preservative, pooled or 24 hour specimens, leaking or nonsterile containers, and specimens collected in diaper or other absorbent materials

Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 24 hours; Boric acid tube ambient or refrigerated to 48 hours.

Comments

Results indicate colony count and identification of significant isolates.  Fastidious organisms such as anaerobic bacteria, mycobacteria or viruses will not be recovered in this culture. Additional charges for identification of organisms (CPT 87077, 87088). Susceptibility tests are performed as appropriate. (CPT 87186, 87184, 87181, 87147).
