Guidelines

This is a screening culture from any site for carriage of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) only. Usual sources are rectal or stool. It does not include Gram stain or susceptibility. Order a Culture, Skin Superficial, or Culture, Exudate if full work-up is desired on a lesion.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Swab area using culture collection/transport swab. Place stool in Enteric Transport to fill line on vial or deliver fresh stool to lab within 1 hour of collection.

Handling

Must specify specimen source on order or requisition. Deliver ASAP to the laboratory.

1 swab, 1 vial of stool in Enteric Transport vial or 0.5 gm fresh stool
