Cytomegalovirus (CMV) by PCR, Body Fluid
Specimen Collection Requirements
Body Fluid (pleural, peritoneal, ascites, pericardial, amniotic, or ocular), Urine, Respiratory Specimen: Sterile container
Spinal Fluid: Sterile vial(s)
Throat Swab: Culture transport swab
Tissue (brain, colon, kidney, liver, lung, etc): Sterile container containing 1-2 mL of sterile saline or multi-microbe medium (M5)
Bone marrow: EDTA
Body Fluid: Specimen grossly contaminated with blood may inhibit the PCR and produce false-negative results. The high sensitivity of amplification by PCR requires the specimen to be processed in an environment in which contamination of the specimen by CMV DNA is not likely. Respiratory Specimens: Bronchial washing, bronchoalveolar lavage, nasopharyngeal aspirate or washing, sputum, or tracheal aspirate are acceptable. Spinal Fluid: Do not centrifuge. Specimen grossly contaminated with blood may inhibit the PCR and produce false-negative results. The high sensitivity of amplification by PCR requires the specimen to be processed in an environment in which contamination of the specimen by CMV DNA is not likely. Throat Swab: Place swab back into swab cylinder.
Body/Ocular Fluid, Spinal Fluid, or Urine: 0.3 mL
Respiratory: 1 mL
Calcium alginate-tipped swab, wood swab, or transport swab containing gel; blood, serum, stool, paraffin blocks, or breast milk
Body Fluid, Spinal Fluid, Urine: Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: 7 days
Respiratory Specimen, Throat Swab, Tissue: Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: Unacceptable
