Guidelines

This testing should only be ordered when a urine specimen is not available for testing. Urine is the preferred specimen for drugs of abuse testing.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 7 mL red, two 4 mL dark green (sodium heparin), or two 4 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells within 1 hour of collection.

5 mL

3 mL Serum/Plasma, (Whole Blood 5 mL minimum draw)

Rejection Criteria

Frozen whole blood, gross hemolysis, specimens collected in PST or SST tubes
