Epstein-Barr Virus by PCR, Plasma or Serum
Specimen Collection Requirements
Serum or Plasma, one plain red, gold (SST) or lavender (EDTA) top tube
Serum or Plasma: Centrifuge blood samples ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Remove serum or plasma before transporting and freeze.
Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 5 days; Frozen: 1 year
Polymerase Chain Reaction
Negative: Epstein-Barr virus not detected by PCR.
Positive: Epstein-Barr virus detected by PCR.
A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or Epstein-Barr virus DNA in concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.
