Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum, one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube

Handling

Allow serum tubes to clot completely at room temperature (minimum - SST: 30 minutes, red top tubes: 60 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum from cells ASAP.

1.0 mL Serum

0.3 mL Serum, (0.8 mL minimum draw whole blood draw)

  • Grossly hemolyzed specimens
  • Plasma specimens

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 20 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 48 hours; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 2 months

Testing Information

Note

If patient is on fulvestrant and accuracy of result is of concern: Order HOLDREF test. Specify estradiol by LC/MS/MS is needed due to fulvestrant interference.
