Guidelines

Used to detect gastrointestinal bleeding related to diverticulitis, polyps, Crohn’s disease, or colorectal cancer.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

No dietary restrictions are required for this test. Certain medications such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may cause gastrointestinal irritation and subsequent bleeding, which would cause positive results. Bleeding hemorrhoids, constipation bleeding, menstrual bleeding, or urinary bleeding may cause positive results.

Collect

Stool, the OC-Auto sampling bottle must be used.

Rejection Criteria

Stool not received in Sampling Bottle. Frozen stool or stool in enteric, viral, or transport media are unacceptable.

Stability

Stool specimens in Sampling Bottles are stable for up to 15 days at room temperature (15-30ºC) or up to 30 days refrigerated (2-8ºC).
