This test is used for stool specimen occult blood screening. This is a test for occult or hidden blood. It detects heme, not intact RBC’s. Diagnostic test for active upper GI bleeding. Do not use for specimens visually positive for blood.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

For 7 days before and during stool collection: avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or more than one adult aspirin a day. Tylenol does not interfere. Eat a balanced diet including fiber, fruits and vegetables. For 3 days before and during collection: avoid vitamin C in excess of 250 mg/day. Avoid alcohol in excess. Do not use antiseptics containing iodine. Avoid red meats.

Collect

Collect stool in dry clean container before contact with toilet bowl water.

Handling

Apply thin smear of stool to card sample area. Follow directions on card. For specimen collection and transport, see Specimen Collection-Transport Guide for Stool Orders. Record the time of collection on the card.
