Guidelines

Use to diagnose H. pylori infection in adults (>17 years of age). For children and adolescents, refer to Helicobacter pylori Breath Test, Pediatric (H PYLORI BP).

When used to monitor treatment, the test should be performed four weeks after cessation of definitive therapy. The patient should be informed that the Pranactin®-Citric drink that will be administered contains phenylalanine. Phenylketonurics restrict dietary phenylalanine.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

This test requires the patient to drink a solution (Pranactin-Citric) containing aspartame, citric acid, and mannitol. Caution should be taken when administering this test to phenylketonurics and patients with hypersensitivities to these ingredients. The patient should fast and abstain from smoking for 1 hour prior to test administration. The patient should not have taken antibiotics, bismuth preparations, or proton pump inhibitors for at least 14 days. Allow 4 weeks after cessation of definitive therapy before performing this test. Additional warnings and precautions are included with the BreathTek UBT kit. Please review these carefully.

BreathTek UBiT® Kit is available using the Client Supply Order or by contacting Legacy Client Services at 503-413-1234. Up to 3 kits may be ordered at one time. Legacy PSCs DO NOT stock UBiT kits and CAN NOT provide kits to patients directly. Instructions are provided with kit. CRITICAL ROOM TEMPERATURE.

Rejection Criteria

Bags not fully inflated or only one of the two bags submitted, breath collected in tubes, pediatric specimens from persons 17 years or younger.
Post breath specimens collected earlier than 13 minutes or later than 18 minutes after patient drinks the testing solution.

Testing Information

Note

For a valid result, the post breath specimen must be collected 13 to 18 minutes after the patient drinks the Pranactin-Citric solution.
