Guidelines

Confirmation testing will not be performed on patient samples for which a hemoglobin variant(s) has been previously identified, unless the gel pattern by the primary testing method indicates a change from previous results.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Whole blood, one 4.0 mL and one 2.0 mL lavender (EDTA) or two 2.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes

Handling

Do not separate. Do not freeze.

Preferred Volume

6.0 mL EDTA Whole Blood

Minimum Volume

3.0 mL EDTA Whole Blood

Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Clotted or frozen specimens

Stability

UNSPUN SAMPLES:  Room Temperature (18-26°C): Unacceptable; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 7 days; Frozen (≤ -20°C): Unacceptable

Testing Information

Note

For specimens more than 24 hours old, the HRBC and HRBC MORPH will not be performed, and will not be included.

If a lab other than Legacy performs the CBC with the red cell morphology and iron studies, submit a copy of the CBC with the red cell morphology and iron studies.
