Guidelines

Order this assay only when a specimen is repeatedly reactive for hepatitis B surface antigen.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 4.0 mL gold (SST), also acceptable: 3.0 mL mint green (lithium heparin, PST) or 3.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tube

Handling

Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.

Preferred Volume

1.0 mL

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL Serum/Plasma

Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Rejection Criteria

Heat-inactivated, grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimens, specimens containing particulate material or collected in citrate-based anticoagulant

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 6 days; Frozen: Indefinitely (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)
