Detection and differentiation of individual antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 in serum.

Guidelines

Legacy Laboratory Services performs this as a reflex for HIV Confirmation and Differentiation. The test is reflexed only from a fourth generation HIV Screening protocol.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Serum samples collected by standard laboratory procedure may be used in the test. See collection guidelines for collection of serum samples located in Legacy Laboratory Guide.

Serum, one 5.0 mL Gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate from cells within 24 hours of collection.

Rejection Criteria

Cord blood, microbial contamination, cadaver specimens or samples other than serum have not been evaluated and may give incorrect results.
