Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Whole Blood (maternal): One 4.0 mL or 2.0 mL lavender (EDTA) tube.

Amniotic or other Body Fluid: Collect in sterile container.

Handling

Samples that cannot be immediately processed must be stored at 2-8°C

Whole Blood (maternal) EDTA: Do not under fill or over fill tube. EDTA tubes must be filled to a minimum of 1/2 of the maximum sample volume.

Amniotic or other Body Fluids must not be clotted.

1.0 mL

0.5 mL

Transport

Whole Blood: Refrigerate at 2-8°C; Amniotic Fluid: Refrigerate at 2-8°C

Rejection Criteria

Under filled tube, overfilled tube, frozen, clotted or grossly hemolyzed samples, incorrect anticoagulant, cord blood

Stability

Whole Blood (maternal) EDTA: Two weeks refrigerated (2-8°C)

Amniotic or other Body Fluid: 24 hours refrigerated (2-8°C)
