Guidelines

Parallel testing is preferred and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of the acute specimens. Please mark specimen plainly as acute or convalescent. 

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum separator tube or green (sodium or lithium heparin). 

Handling

Separate serum from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection.

Preferred Volume

1.0 mL

Minimum Volume

0.05 mL

Transport

Refrigerated.

Rejection Criteria

Contaminated, heat-inactivated, hemolyzed, severely lipemic specimens. Any other body fluid.

Stability

After separation from cells: Ambient: 48 hours; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 1 year (avoid  repeated freeze/thaw cycles) 

Testing Information

Note

A negative result does not rule out the possibility of leptospirosis.
