Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Spinal Fluid and Synovial Fluid: Sterile vial(s), Tissue: Sterile container with normal saline

Handling

Indicate specimen source on specimen label and on requisition or order. For Tissue specimens: Wash biopsy site with an antiseptic soap. Thoroughly rinse area with sterile water. Do not use alcohol or iodine preparations. A local anesthetic may be used. Biopsy specimens are best taken by punch biopsy to include full thickness of dermis.

Preferred Volume

CSF or Synovial fluid: 1.0 mL, Tissue: 4 mm in diameter biopsy

Minimum Volume

CSF or Synovial Fluid: 0.5 mL

Specimens in green (heparin) top tubes

Stability

CSF and Synovial fluid: Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 1 week
