Specimen Collection Requirements
Respiratory Specimen: sputum, lung washes, tracheal aspirates, nasopharyngeal swab, bronchoalveolar lavage, bronchial brushings or CSF in a sterile collection container or M4 transport medium
Specimen source is required on the specimen and requsition. Separate samples must be submited when multiple tests are ordered.
2.0 mL Respiratory specimen or 1.0 mL CSF
Nonsterile or leaking container, respiratory aspirated in collection containers with tubing
Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 5 days; Frozen: 1 year

Reference Values
Negative: Mycoplasma pneumoniae DNA not detected.
Positive: Mycoplasma pneumoniae DNA detected.
A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen, or Mycoplasma pneumoniae DNA concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.
