Guidelines

Urinary myoglobin is highly unstable unless alkalinized with Na2CO3 preservative. Even with alkalinization, myoglobin deterioration is variable and specimen dependent (approximate averages of 10% at 1 day, 20% at 3 days, and 30% at 7 days).

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Urine, 10 mL urine myoglobin transport tube (Mayo supply #T691)

Handling

1.) If specimen is at ambient temperature, aliquot the urine to a urine myoglobin transport tube (Supply T691) within 1 hour of collection. Refrigerate specimen.
2.) If specimen is refrigerated, aliquot the urine to a urine myoglobin transport tube (Supply T691) within 2 hours of collection.

Preferred Volume

5.0 mL Preserved Urine

Minimum Volume

1.0 mL Preserved Urine

Transport

Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Rejection Criteria

Use of any transport tube other than urine myoglobin transport tube (T691).

Stability

Preserved Urine: Refrigerated (2-8 °C): 7 days
