Patient Preparation

Fasting (8-14 hours) is preferred, but not required.

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 5.0 mL gold (SST), 7.0 mL red or 3.0 mL mint green (lithium heparin, PST) top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: SST - 30 minutes and red top tubes - 60 minutes). Preferably separate serum or plasma from cells before transport.

Serum and plasma levels are highest in the late morning and lowest in the evening.

Eltrombopag and its metabolites may interfere with this assay causing erroneously high patient results.

Patients receiving a high-dose liposomal Amphotericin B therapy (L-AMB) may generate false low results.
