Plasma, Thawed

Blood Product

Description

200-250 mL plasma plus anticoagulant frozen within 24 hours of collection. Contains ~200 units of all plasma clotting factors (V, VII, X, XI, XIII) and 200-400 mg fibrinogen.

Patient Preparation

Coagulation studies should be done before FP is ordered. Patient should have patient identification wristband for comparison with component container before administration. See the LHS Blood Adminstration Policy.

Storage

Frozen at <-18°C; Thawed product stored at 1-6°C

Expiration

Frozen: 1 year Thawed: 5 days

Reported

Allow a minimum of 30 minutes for thawing.

Comment

FP must be ABO compatible. Rh compatibility not required. Crossmatch not necessary.

Use

Use same as FP. Correction of INR >1.5, PTT >60 seconds. Bleeding related to coagulation factor deficiencies where specific concentrates are not available or are contraindicated.

Transfusion Guidelines for Adults

Limitations

Not suitable for VIII correction. Volume overload can be problematic. Not to be used solely for volume expansion.

Dosage

Hemostatic dose 10 mL/kg; Usual adult dose for INR >1.5 is 2 units FP. If INR >2 consider 4 units FP.

Administration

Transfuse 5-10 mL/minute or as patient tolerates. Must be administered with an in-line (170-260 micron) filter.
