Collect

Whole Blood, Three FULL 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes

-AND-

Serum, Two 5.0 mL gold (SST) or One 8.5 mL Red-Grey Marble top tubes

-AND-

Urine, One sterile wide-mouthed container without preservatives (15 mL). First morning void is preferred.

Handling

EDTA WB: One lavender top tube used for CBC must be at least half full & not over 24 hours old. Do not under- or over-fill tubes. The two lavender top tubes for blood typing & Ab screen must be labeled appropriately. See Blood Bank Collection Guidelines.

Serum: Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: SST - 30 minutes). Separate serum or plasma from cells within 1 hour of collection.

Urine: Deliver to the lab ASAP or refrigerate immediately if specimen will not arrive to laboratory within 1 hour.

Preferred Volume

EDTA WB: 12.0 mL in three full 4.0 mL lavender top tubes

Serum: 5.5 mL

Urine: 15.0 mL

Minimum Volume

EDTA WB: 6.0 mL in one full 4.0mL and one 2.0 mL lavender top tubes

Serum: 2.5 mL (6.25 mL minimum whole blood draw)

Urine: 15.0 mL

Transport

EDTA WB: Refrigerated (2-8 ºC)

Serum: Refrigerated (2-8 ºC)

Urine: Deliver to the lab ASAP or refrigerate immediately if specimen will not arrive to laboratory within 1 hour.

Rejection Criteria

EDTA WB and Serum: Hemolyzed specimens, Contaminated with bacteria, Grossly lipemic or turbid specimens, Incorrect specimen container, Incorrectly labeled, Specimen too old

EDTA WB Only: Frozen, Clotted, Tube less than half full

Urine: Frozen specimen, specimen collected with preservatives, urine collected in a diaper or other absorbent material

Stability

EDTA WB: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 12 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 24 hours; Frozen (≤ -20°C): Unacceptable

Serum: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 8 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 48 hours; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 2 months

Urine: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 2 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 12 hours; Frozen (≤ -20°C): Unacceptable
