Guidelines

Submit specimen with all completed clinical information on the Prenatal Screening Requisition (Click here to view/print form). The following information is required: patient's date of birth, patient's ethnicity, patient's weight, estimated date of delivery, dating method (LMP or US), number of fetuses present, medication dependent diabetic, smoking status, previous pregnancy history with ONTD, and for IVF pregnancies, the birthdate or age of the egg donor.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Specimen must be drawn between 15 weeks, 0 days to 20 weeks, 6 days gestation. Patient history is required.

Collect

Serum, one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube

Supply Item Number - 101235 or 101192

Handling

Allow serum tubes to clot completely at room temperature (minimum - SST: 30 minutes, red top tubes: 60 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum from cells ASAP. Submit specimens with Prenatal Screening Requisition.

0.5 mL Serum (1.2 mL minimum whole blood draw)

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens collected outside 15 weeks, 0 days to 20 weeks, 6 days gestation
  • Grossly hemolyzed specimens
  • Plasma specimens
  • Specimens that have been frozen and thawed more than once

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 8 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 14 days; Frozen (≤ - 20°C): 2 months. Do not freeze/thaw specimens more than once.
