Guidelines

This test requires a nuchal translucency (NT) measurement that has been performed by a certified ultrasonographer (Click here to view/print form).The ultrasonographer MUST be certified to perform NT measurements by one of the following agencies: Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) or Nuchal Translucency Quality Review (NTQR). To avoid possible test delays for an ultrasonographer who is new to our database, please contact Legacy's Prenatal Screening Department at (503) 413-5133 BEFORE sending patient specimen.

Submit specimen with all completed clinical information on the Prenatal Screening Requisition (Click here to view/print form).The following information is required: patient's date of birth, patient's ethnicity, patient's weight, estimated date of delivery, number of fetuses present, medication dependent diabetic, smoking status, previous pregnancy history with a chromosome abnormality, ultrasound date, sonographer name, sonographer certification number, nuchal translucency, crown rump length, and for IVF pregnancies, the birthdate or age of the egg donor.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Specimen must be drawn between 11 weeks, 0 days to 13 weeks, 6 days gestation. CRL measurement must be between 40.6-84.0 mm. Patient history is required.

Collect

Serum, one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube

Handling

Allow serum tubes to clot completely at room temperature (minimum – SST: 30 minutes and red top tubes: 60 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum from cells ASAP.  Submit specimens with Prenatal Screening Requisition.

1.0 mL Serum (2.5 mL minimum whole blood draw)

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens collected outside 11 weeks, 0 days to 13 weeks, 6 days gestation
  • A CRL measurement outside of 40.6-84.0 mm
  • Grossly hemolyzed specimens
  • Plasma specimens
  • Specimens that have been frozen and thawed more than once

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 8 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 7 days; Frozen (≤ - 20°C): 56 days. Do not freeze/thaw specimens more than once.
