RH IMMUNE GLOBULIN Mnemonic SE RHIG Synonym Rhogam® RhIG Workup Includes ABO and Rh type of mother, fetal bleed screen and antibody screen of mother. Guidelines To prevent Rh-negative individuals from becoming sensitized to D antigen after exposure to Rh-positive red cells through pregnancy or transfusion. Testing is done to determine eligibility and dosing of Rh Immune Globulin. This product is recommended for Rh negative patients, for antepartum use at 26-28 weeks or at any time following termination of pregnancy, abortion, amniocentesis, ectopic pregnancy, significant abdominal trauma. May be indicated in some Rh negative patients receiving Rh positive blood products. Specimen Collection Requirements Patient Preparation Patient should have patient identification wristband for checking against component container label before administration. Collect Post-partum blood specimens from both mother and newborn are required for testing. Two full 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes, collected post-partum from mother. One lavender top microtainer tube from the newborn. Handling Tubes must be labeled appropriately. See Blood Bank Specimen Collection Guidelines. A normal dose contains 300 µg anti-D; Mini vial 50 µg anti-D. Dosage: One ampule per 30 cc fetal blood, calculated from Kleihauer-Betke test. One mini vial of 50 µg ampule for termination of pregnancy within first 12 weeks. One dose all other indications. Limitations: A single dose is occasionally not adequate. Failures occur.
